Villa Natta-Soleri – Il Castello di Bussana Nuova Does your dream of Italy include a historic villa on the Riviera where the architecture, history and location are all something quite out of the ordinary? In Bussana Nuova, just east of Sanremo, stands Villa Natta-Soleri, locally known as Il Castello di Bussana Nuova. The villa was built in 1890 for the nobleman Raffaele Natta-Soleri during the years following the devastating earthquake of 1887, when the new settlement of Bussana Nuova began to take shape. Above the monumental entrance, the inscription ANNO MDCCCXC – 1890 can still be seen, while an original architectural drawing signed “L’Architetto Eugenio Fornari” has also been preserved. It is above all the villa's striking tower that gave the property its local name – the Castle of Bussana Nuova. The architecture reflects late 19th-century Italian historicism with influences from both Renaissance and classical architecture. Inside, the historical character continues with high ceilings, large windows, a marble staircase, parquet and terracotta floors, decorative fireplaces and numerous original details. One of the most interesting chapters in the villa's history only came to light after the property changed ownership in 2017. When later layers of wallpaper and wall coverings were removed, extensive decorative wall paintings dating from the late 19th century were rediscovered. Flowers, birds, branches, landscapes, bamboo and other naturalistic and Japonist motifs had remained hidden for generations. They subsequently became an important part of the restoration of the villa. The ground floor forms the representative part of the house with its principal salons and dining room, while the floor above traditionally served as the family's more private area with bedrooms and living spaces. At the top of the house is the impressive tower room with a ceiling height of approximately 4.40 metres. According to descendants of the Natta-Soleri family, the room was used as a private salon and reception room for the family and their guests. On the same level are also the smaller rooms that were originally used by household staff. The lower part of the villa includes garage space, storage and technical rooms as well as a separate apartment for the property's caretaker. Outside is a mature Mediterranean garden with established trees, palms and traditional planting. From the house and terraces there are views towards the Ligurian coastline and the sea. The location is unusual for a property of this character. The beach is only around 400 metres away and everyday amenities are within a few minutes' walk. Bussana Nuova lies immediately east of Sanremo. On the hill above is Bussana Vecchia, the old village that was badly damaged in the earthquake of 1887 and later developed into a well-known artists' village with stone houses, studios, ruins and narrow lanes. Along the coast runs the Pista Ciclabile del Ponente Ligure, the popular cycling and walking route created along the former railway line. A few kilometres to the west is Sanremo with its restaurants, shops, marina, Teatro Ariston, Casino di Sanremo and the historic La Pigna district.
